FlightAutonomy Spark's FlightAutonomy System features a main camera, vision positioning system (VPS), 3D object sensing, GPS, a high-precision IMU, and a 24-core controller. Together these allow Spark to hover accurately anywhere with VPS assistance at up to 98', sense obstacles from up to 15' away, and land safely. Return to Home Where GPS is available, the Spark it able to return to its takeoff point and land itself. This will happen automatically if the battery gets too low, the controller signal is lost, or you press the RTH (Return to Home) button on the app or controller. Spark is able to sense and maneuver around obstacles as it returns. DJI's magnesium-aluminum-clad Inspire 2 Quadcopter is a powerful cinematic and photographic tool. Combining the Inspire 2 with the separately available X4S and X5S gimbal cameras yields cinema-grade images, which can be recorded in high bit rates using H.264 and H.265 formats, or, in the case of the X5R, various flavors of Apple ProRes and CinemaDNG raw using the required licenses available from DJI. All the recording functionality is processed by the Inspire 2's CineCore 2.0 image processing engine. Not all the power to be found in the Inspire 2 is in the recording functionality. DJI beefed up the flight capabilities of the Inspire 2. Able to accelerate to 50 mph in 4 seconds and reach a top speed of 58 mph, the Inspire 2 can follow fast-moving subjects for dramatic sports and action footage. The flight prowess of the Inspire 2 doesn't come at the expense of battery life. With the two included LiPo batteries onboard, up to 27 minutes of flight time can be had on a full charge. Advanced obstacle avoidance has also made its way to the Inspire 2. Built into DJI's FlightAutonomy system, objects in front of, below, and above the quadcopter can be detected and avoided automatically. The Inspire 2 can even remember flight paths in case of an emergency return-to-home without GPS enabled. What's more, using the onboard 2-axis stabilized FPV camera, the pilot can navigate the Inspire 2 without being limited to the gimbal camera's field-of-view. Obstacle-sensing systems are active during normal flight, RTH, and all Intelligent Flight Modes. Spotlight Pro Spotlight Pro is a powerful tracking mode that allows even single pilots to capture complex, dramatic images. It uses advanced, visual-tracking algorithms to lock onto a subject during flight, regardless of the direction that the Inspire 2 flies, creating shots that would once have required a dedicated camera operator. If the gimbal comes close to reaching its rotation limits, the Inspire 2 itself will rotate in the same direction without affecting flight control or the shot being captured to free up gimbal movement.Spotlight Pro has two shooting modes: Quick Mode and Composition Mode. In Quick Mode, select an object to begin tracking. In Composition Mode, select the subject and the tracking position. When the subject enters the preset tracking position, press the shortcut to begin tracking. The gimbal can be moved during shooting for composition adjustments. Spotlight Pro is available in all Intelligent Flight Modes including ActiveTrack, TapFly, Waypoint and Point of Interest. TapFly The 2-axis onboard FPV camera separates the flight view from the main camera view, effectively giving the Inspire 2 a dedicated "tap-to-fly" camera. Tap a point onscreen in the FPV view to set a flight route and the Inspire 2 will automatically fly along that route, leaving the pilot to focus on gimbal movement. ActiveTrack The ActiveTrack Mode allows the Inspire 2 to recognize a range of objects, from people to bikes to cars to boats. Tracking profiles that can be adjusted based on the subject being tracked means greater tracking precision. Smart Return Home Forward and downward vision systems allow the Inspire 2 to create a real-time map of its flight route as it flies. If the video transmission system signal is lost and Smart Return Home is enabled, it is able to fly home along its original route and change to a straight line when it regains a signal. As it returns, it will use the primary camera to identify obstacles as far as 200m in front, allowing it to plan a safe route home. It is also able to reconnect more quickly after losing connection. Video Transmission System The Inspire 2 features DJI's Lightbridge technology. This iteration has an effective transmission distance of up to 4.3 miles (under ideal conditions) and is capable of delivering both 1080p/720p video as well as the FPV view to pilot and camera operator. Users can also switch between 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz control frequencies to avoid interference for greater signal stability.Master and Slave setups are also supported. The master controller can transmit an HD video signal to the slave controller up to 300' away without image quality loss. Broadcast Mode Broadcasters can broadcast direct from the Inspire 2 using its dedicated 1080i50 and 720p60 transmission signal. Aerial live-streaming direct to TV is as simple as connecting the Inspire 2 transmitter to the satellite truck. Powerful Flight Performance The propulsion system can thrust the Inspire 2 up to 58 mph and allows for descents at up to 29 feet-per-second and ascents at up to 19 feet-per-second. It can accelerate from 0 to 50 mph in just four seconds and flies at a max attitude angle of 40°. The two controller sticks on the transmitter are tuned for more sensitivity, making delicate maneuvers easier. Dual Battery Design Dual batteries mean that, if a problem occurs on one battery, the other is able to continue flight long enough for a safe landing. At the same time, the Inspire 2 propulsion system is driven a PWM signal with serial port signal redundancy so that if PWM signals are lost, transmission will continue through the serial port. There are redundant compasses and IMUs, and dual sensors forward, overhead and below. If a battery fails, Inspire 2 returns home safely on the other battery. It will accurately return to its shooting position after you swap out fresh batteries — and you can hot swap, which saves time. Lightbridge: Long Range, Dependability Video transmission is through DJI’s Lightbridge program. It has a range of 4.3 miles. And it has two frequencies — 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz. If the Inspire 2 detects interference on one frequency, it automatically switches to the other. That keeps your streamed video constant and sharp. Obstacle Avoidance You work to make sure nothing gets in the way of your career, or of an important assignment, so it’s only appropriate that nothings gets in the way of your Inspire 2, either. Inspire 2 can sense obstacles a far away as 94 feet, even when it flies as fast as 34 mph. It will sense and avoid obstacles whether you are at the controls, you use Tap Fly, or Return to Home is activated. Flying indoors? Sensors detect overhead objects as a far away as 16 feet, and objects in front as close as 2 feet. Terrain Awareness With ActiveTrack, the Inspire can recognize and follow its subject. But what if the subject is walking uneven terrain — along a trail, or up and down stairs? Inspire 2’s bottom sensors help it recognize changes in terrain. It will follow along just as it’s supposed to, maintaining a uniform height off the ground. Head-Snapping Performance Four 15-inch propellers — the huge props generate gobs of thrust — can accelerate the Inspire 2 from 0 to 50 mph in just 4 seconds. Your equipment van won’t come close. Filming a chase scene? The crooks will outrun the cops before they escape the Inspire 2, which can hit 67 mph and maneuver to follow their every turn. After all, it will lock onto them. Want to get that elevated shot fast? Inspire 2 can climb at 19.7 feet per second. Go ahead and yell “Close up!” Inspire 2 can descend at a breath-taking 29 feet per second. You won’t miss a single, valuable high-def frame of action. Return to Home Return to Home is engineered to get your drone back safely to you if a signal is lost or power becomes unacceptably low. Return to Home is smart. Return to Home is safe. Return to Home is insurance on your investment. Here’s how it works: The Inspire 2 creates a real-time map of the route you direct it to take. That’s part of what the vision sensors do. If Return to Home is activated automatically, the Inspire 2 goes to its memory of the route — the safe, obstacle-free route it just took — and follows it home. If the signal is restored, the Inspire 2 flies home on a straight line, automatically avoiding obstacles in its path. Live TV from the Inspire 2 For a TV crew using an Inspire 2, transmitting images live for a real-time television broadcast is quite simple. The 1080i50 or 780p60 video streamed from the Inspire 2 can go straight into living rooms. Just connect the Inspire 2 remote controller to the satellite truck. With a satellite link, the signal can be sent instantly anywhere in the world. TapFly Frees Your Hands With TapFly, you can touch an area of the FPV screen and the Inspire 2 will follow the route you designate. That frees the pilot’s hands from commanding the drone. It lets the pilot concentrate on aerial imaging. TapFly lets you pay attention to gimbal movement, not the flight route. High-Performance Cameras The Inspire 2 produces quality video and stills with either of two cameras available through DroneNeds.com. Both are stabilized by DJI’s motorized, nearly silent 3-axis gimbal. Their performance is elevated by a DJI CineCore processor, which is built into the Inspire 2 itself. The X4S has a DJI fixed lens with rapid autofocus. It shoots 4K video at 60fps, which also allows quality slow motion, and H.264 and H.265 at 100Mbs. The stunning 20.8MP stills are distortion-free because the X4S has a leaf shutter, which prevents rolling distortion on even the fastest action— action by your subject or by your drone. Shoot stills in either DNG or JPEG formats, in rapid 14fps bursts. The DJI X5S camera is even more capable. CineCore 2 processing, which is built into the Inspire 2 body, allows the X5S to shoot cinematic-quality 5.2K video at 30fps. It shoots 4K video at 60fps. Stills are recorded at 20.8MP, and they are shot in mind-boggling 20 fps bursts. Ground shooting Although the gimbal and camera can be removed from the Inspire 2, no Osmo Handheld System for the X5S camera is yet available. It’s coming, however, so stay tuned. Until that time, you can handhold the Inspire 2 for ground video, relying on its gimbal to smooth your hand and body movements from the video. The Inspire 2 weighs about 7.6 pounds. Shooting Modes: Like Having Extra Hands ActiveTrack lets you lock onto your subject, but shooting modes in the Inspire 2 let you get sophisticated video and stills even if you don’t have a dedicated camera operator. Quick Mode locks onto and begins following the subject immediately. Composition Mode memorizes the subject, then begins tracking the subject when it enters a certain area, needing only your command. The gimbal settings can be changed for creative shots. Point of Interest lets you lock on a subject and circle it, recording as you go. With Waypoints, you can fly a route and mark certain spots, and the drone will automatically fly the route, stop where you told it to, and record, then hover or return home — your choice. Spotlight keeps an object in the frame as you maneuver your Inspire 2 for creative angles. Climb, dive, circle, hover — with Spotlight, your subject remains in your images. Add a Controller for Your Videographer Control does take a leap higher with a second remote controller. Operating remote controllers in a master-slave arrangement, the pilot flies off the video streamed from the built-in FPV camera, while the camera operator sees what the video camera sees. The videographer controls the camera, concentrating on aerial imaging. The two controllers can be as far apart as 328 feet. Multiple slaves can be linked. There's also omnidirectional obstacle sensing that provides object avoidance with sensors on all sides of the Mavic 2 Pro. All of this comes in a compact and foldable design that can be easily thrown into a backpack or large camera bag. Hasselblad L1D-20c Gimbal Camera This gimbal camera is designed to provide photographers and videographers with professional results. It possesses Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology, which gives you the ability to capture up to 20MP aerial images in stunning color detail, and with the 1" CMOS sensor, you can take advantage of the extensive ISO range of 3200 to 12,800,The Hasselblad camera also supports the 10-bit Dlog-M color profile and 4K 10-bit HDR video capture. Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing To keep your Mavic 2 Pro safe and your footage pristine, DJI has covered all sides of the Mavic 2 with obstacle sensors:Forward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 65', and a detectable range of 65 to 131'. The Mavic 2 is designed to safely stop when obstacles are detected while flying at up to 31.3 mph.Downward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 36', and a detectable range of 36 to 72'. It also has an infrared sensor that can measure up to 28' away. The sensors also allow for accurate hovering at up to 164' and can detect land to land safely. A bottom auxiliary light helps the sensor in low-light conditions.Left and Right Sensors: Detects obstacles at speeds of up to 18 mph in both ActiveTrack and Tripod modes.Backward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 52', and a detectable range of 52 to 104.9'. The Mavic 2 is designed to safely stop when obstacles are detected while flying at up to 27 mph.Upward Sensor: Infrared sensor can precisely measure at ranges of up to 26'. Additional Features Low-drag body design helps provide a top speed of up to 47.7 mph. Four-cell LiPo battery can provide up to 31 minutes of flight time. A combination of an FOC sinusoidal drive ESCs and low-noise propellers keeps flights quiet. Panorama image mode with support for Sphere, 180°, Horizontal, and Vertical modes. The Best Folding Drone The Mavic 2 Pro takes its design cues from the original Mavic Pro, but is a little bigger all around. It measures 3.3 by 3.6 by 8.4 inches (HWD) folded and 3.3 by 9.5 by 12.7 inches with it arms extended. Unfolding the drone is pretty easy, you just have to remember to swing the front arms out before the bottom ones.  Despite being a bit bigger than the original Mavic and the more recent Mavic Air, the Mavic 2 Pro is still quite portable. It fits nicely in a camera bag, taking up about the same space as a typical 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. You'll have to make a little more space for the remote control, charger, and any extra batteries you buy, but you won't have to dedicate a backpack to the Mavic as you do with the Phantom design. DJI is splitting the Mavic 2 line into two models—the Pro, which we're reviewing here—and the Zoom, which has a 2x optical zoom lens, but a smartphone-sized 1/2.3-inch, 12MP image sensor. The Mavic 2 Pro leaps ahead with a 1-inch sensor, about four times the size of the imager behind the Mavic 2 Zoom's lens. The larger surface area allows for more image resolution (20MP), and higher-quality video. The included remote control is similar to what you get with other Mavic models. It's gray, with a short, changeable cable to connect to your smartphone, which mounts below the controller. Two clips hold your phone—they're big enough to accommodate a phablet and can handle a slim phone case, but you'll need to take your phone out of its case if you use a bulky one. There is a cutout on the left clip, so you can access your phone's home button while it's mounted in the remote. Cables are included for phones that use Lightning, micro USB, and USB-C ports. The remote has a monochrome display—it shows battery status, telemetry data, and other information. It's possible to fly the Mavic 2 without a phone attached, but you'll need an Android or iOS device and the DJI Go 4 app to activate the drone before your first flight. We don't recommend flying without a phone, though, as you won't see the view through the camera without one. In addition to the flight sticks—which are removable for storage—the remote includes dual control wheels and buttons at the shoulders. The left wheel tilts the camera up and down, while the right brightens or darkens the exposure, and the buttons are used to snap a picture or start a video. The remote also has a switch to change flight modes on its side, a dedicated button to activate the Mavic's return-to-home feature, and a Pause button to freeze the drone in place. There is also a small four-way controller—it can be used to point the camera straight ahead or straight down. Two programmable control buttons, located on the rear, round things out. The Mavic 2 Pro is rated for up to 31 minutes of flight on a full battery charge. That number is based on the amount of time the drone can hover in place, so expect a few minutes less life in reality. Our tests netted an average of 27 minutes—that's still quite a bit of time in the air, better than the 23 minutes the original Mavic Pro netted in our flights. You expect a $1,500 drone to include an obstacle avoidance system, and the Mavic 2 doesn't disappoint. It has sensors in every direction. In most flight modes the forward, rear, upward, and downward sensors are active at all times, stopping the drone in place if an obstacle is detected. Switching to ActiveTrack, where the Mavic identifies and tracks a moving subject, enables the side sensors. They also work in Tripod mode, a low-speed setting that lets photographers move the drone very slowly to better frame shots. The Mavic 2 also has a high-speed Sport setting. It ups the maximum flight speed from around 32mph to just shy of 45mph. All obstacle sensors are disabled when Sport is turned on, so use it with care. DJI has started to add internal storage to its drones—we first saw it with the Mavic Air. The Mavic 2 Pro matches the Air's 8GB capacity, and has a microSD card slot too. The card slot is necessary, as 8GB isn't enough space to hold a lot of video. The Mavic 2 shoots 4K footage at 100Mbps, so you'll be limited to a little less than 15 minutes of footage in internal memory. I'd have liked to have seen at least 16GB included with a model that calls itself Pro. Still, memory cards aren't expensive, and having some internal storage means you won't be left in the cold if you forget to pack a card. DJI Go 4 App and Features As with other DJI drones, the Mavic 2 Pro works with the DJI Go 4 app, available as a free download for Android and iOS devices. The app does a lot of things, but most importantly it gives you control over the drone's camera and shows its point of view at 1080p quality. It also shows a map of the world, inlaid in the video feed, which you can swap to if you need to ascertain the Mavic's position relative to you. The app is also where you go to access automated shots, or enter into a special capture mode, like Hyperlapse. Essentially a time-lapse with motion, Hyperlapse is a fun way to capture sped-up views of the world. I'm not a big fan of how DJI has implemented the experience, though—the remote makes a clicking noise each time the drone adds a frame, and the flight speed is slowed down quite a bit. Your mileage may vary, but I'd certainly prefer to see a smooth view from the camera, without audible distractions, like you get with the Hyperlapse mode on the less expensive Parrot Anafi. In addition to Hyperlapse, there are plenty of other automated flight modes and options. They include Asteroid, which mixes panoramic imaging and video to turn a normal view of the world into a Little Planet projection, which we first saw with the Mavic Air. It also supports TapFly, which lets you fly the drone by tapping on your phone's screen, ActiveTrack, and APAS. The latter—the Advanced Pilot Awareness System—is useful for flights when there are numerous obstacles to navigate around. It does slow the drone down, but when enabled it automatically flies around any obstacles it encounters. The app also has some safety features. It works with the drone's GPS to enforce no-fly zones, like the permanent one around the White House and temporary bans of drones around areas where aerial firefighting is happening, both of which can help keep you out of trouble. If you have an FAA Part 107 commercial license, you can also use the app to authorize flights close to airports, saving you the trouble of contacting the control tower directly. Firmware updates, which can be frequent with DJI products, are performed using the app. Superlative Video and Images The DJI Mavic Pro 2 delivers the best drone footage and images you can get in a compact form factor. To better it, you'll need to think about moving up to a big, expensive aircraft with an SLR-sized sensor and changeable lenses, like the DJI Inspire 2. It's not the first time DJI has used the sensor size in a drone—it's also available in the larger Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced models. They're both still available and do offer some advantages—notably support for the wider 4K DCI format. But if you're fine with UHD, you'll find the Mavic to include many of DJI's more recent innovations—including more robust automated shots and APAS—which are not available in the Phantom series. What you do get is 4K UHD footage at 100Mbps, with your choice of H.264 or H.265 compression. You can shoot ready-to-edit footage with a standard color profile—DJI has leveraged color science tech from its partner Hasselblad for the Mavic 2 Pro's camera. Our test footage was all shot with the default color profile. You can opt for a different, baked-in profile if you want your video to have a more artistic, filtered look, or you can shoot with the flat, low-contrast Dlog-M profile. Shooting flat gives you more ability to color correct—Dlog-M is a 10-bit format. It's only recommended for serious video pros, however, as you will need both software and skill to make Dlog-M footage pop. It also supports HDR video, using the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile. There are a number of frame rates available. For 4K you get 24, 25, or 30fps. Dropping resolution to 2.7K adds 48, 50, and 60fps, and you get all of the aforementioned at 1080p (2K), with the addition of 120fps. The lens has a variable aperture, configurable from f/2.8 through f/11, and the sensor can range from ISO 100 through 6400 for video. You'll probably want to add a neutral density filter for flights in bright light—I don't recommend using the lens at a setting narrower than f/5.6 to minimize the resolution loss caused by diffraction—but if you're without one, you can certainly stop down further to maintain proper shutter angles for your footage. There are also two angles of view to choose when shooting at 4K. DJI doesn't do a great job identifying them in the app, which is a shame because it effectively gives the Mavic 2's camera a similar coverage range as the Mavic 2 Zoom for 4K video. The default setting, FOV, is a wide-angle view of the world, about 28mm in full-frame terms. Switching to the HQ (High Quality) setting narrows the camera's angle a bit—it's closer to 40mm. You don't get quite the same range as the Mavic 2 Zoom's camera (24-48mm), but it's close enough. You do lose the ability to perform a dolly zoom shot, but it seems like a fair price to pay for better video overall. Imaging is also quite versatile. We've seen the 1-inch sensor size find a home in compact cameras, where it delivers better results than you can expect from your smartphone. The Mavic 2 Pro shoots images in JPG or Raw DNG format, and I'd expect most serious photographers to use the latter. The big sensor makes low-light aerial imaging an easier task, with an ISO that can be set as high as 12800 when making images. I tend to recommend ISO 3200 as a maximum for this type of sensor, however, but that will still net some stunning twilight photos. The Best Small Drone Is there a more capable folding drone than the DJI Mavic 2 Pro? I don't think so. It's small enough to find space along your terrestrial imaging and video equipment in a backpack, but it doesn't make a lot of sacrifices when compared with larger drones. Assuming you don't absolutely need to shoot footage destined for projection in a cinema, the 4K UHD format (the one used by your TV) is more than enough for any project destined to be viewed in a living room.
